Bush Thanks Chretien, Speaks to Blair
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Wednesday spoke to
British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) and thanked Canadian Prime
Minister Jean Chretien for helping relocate American planes in
the chaotic hours after terrorist attacks on U.S. targets on
Tuesday, the White House said. One day after deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon (news - web sites), which prompted the United States to close all
airports and order all planes to land at the nearest airport,
Bush spoke to the leaders of two of America's closest allies. ``They both expressed their resolve to stand strong against
terrorism,'' White House spokesman Ari Fleischer (news - web sites) said. ``The
president expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Chretien
especially for the role Canada played yesterday in helping
(with) ... the relocation of American planes to Canada.'' Bush started his morning with intelligence briefings and
would hold security meetings throughout the morning before
meeting congressional leaders at 11:30 a.m., Fleischer said.
